Hurricane Katrina was one of the five deadliest
hurricanes, in the history of the United States.
1833 people died in the storm. The hurricane formed August 23, 2005 and dissipated on August 31, 2005. Hurricane Katrina formed as Tropical Depression Twelve over the Southeastern Bahamas. Katrina was classified as a Category 5 hurricane with wind speeds of 280km/h. Total damage was estimated at $108 billion dollars. Most of the deaths occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana which flooded as the levee system failed. Aftermath Katrina destroyed 30 oil platforms and closed 9 refineries. 1.3 million acres of forest lands were destroyed. Due to this hundreds of thousands of local residents became unemployed. Katrina displaced over one million people from the central Gulf coast to anywhere else in the United States. The storm surge caused significant beach erosion and in some cases completely coastal areas. The storm also forced the closure of 16 National Wildlife Refuges. After the hurricane was over many people were in search of food and water. This resulted in carjacking’s, murders, thefts, and assaults.. . This resulted in carjacking’s, murders, thefts, and rapes. |
